[biography] James graduated from Central School of Ballet in 2006 with a BA (hons) degree. After joining Northern Ballet that same year he went on to work with Peter Schaufuss Ballet in Denmark and Theater Ulm in Germany. In 2013 James joined Richard Alston Dance Company (RADC). Since then he has toured extensively in Europe and the USA performing in a wide variety of work by Alston and associate choreographer Martin Lawrance. As of 2017, James is a faculty tutor at Central school of Ballet for the Prep and Pre-senior students. He regularly leads workshops for the Essential Alston education program and is now a Company Ballet teacher for RADC. He teaches Professional classes at the Place, and has worked with LCDS and the Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) scheme. He also leads weekly Contemporary classes at Danceworks Mayfair.
[class description] Dance is movement, and its opposite, in time and space Merce Cunningham Drawing on his years of experience with Richard Alston Dance Company, James uses his innate sense of musicality to explore phrasing through movement. This dynamic Cunningham influenced technique class will strengthen and increase awareness of the body. Starting with a series of simple back exercises, the class work then develops in to longer travelling sequences, exploring a fresh approach to direction and timing.
