IN ON IT: a brilliant theatrical puzzle by Daniel MacIvor
Opening June 6th: Two Brilliant Performers bring Daniel MacIvors Obie Award-winning play IN ON IT back to Los Angeles!
The Production Company is proud to announce the opening of Daniel MacIvors Obie Award-winning play IN ON IT featuring the extraordinary talents of Blake Anthony and Josh Gordon and directed by the gifted Michael Van Duzer.
Is Daniel MacIvors IN ON IT a stylized theatrical puzzle; an acting tour de force for two exceptional performers; a witty and knowing deconstruction of a relationship; a sharply satiric look at the dissolution of a marriage; an exploration of the hairline border between living and dying; or a meditation on how artists create art from life? In truth its all these things. Behind its meta-theatrical intricacies and alienation effects, it has a surprising heart; which accounts for the emotional wallop we experience.
Like the purest of Shakespearean productions, IN ON IT forces its actors to create a world out of themselves, a scant few props and, most importantly, a gray jacket. Simply donning or removing the jacket can conjure a jilted husband, a faithless wife or a grief-stricken playwright. While the concentric circles of the plays three realities collide and intersect in ways that only become clear in the plays final act, the gray jacket remains a literal touchstonethe only tangible item in a constantly changing landscape. The playwright successfully breaks all of the rules of legitimate theatre by deconstructing the play, with the two actors giving a stimulating interplay on a bare stage with their thoughts, togetherness and the clever bantering between them about the play within the play. CurtainUp.com wrote there is a depth and universality in this work that is surprising and quite remarkable really. This is theater more than worthy of our attention.
MacIvor, who has been described as Canada's true creative genius, is an actor, director and playwright. IN ON IT first premiered in the United States Off-Broadway in 2001 and won the Obie Award in 2002. The playwright played one of the two roles.
Director Michael Van Duzer has helmed many highly successful Los Angeles productions including The Collection, As You Like It, What the Butler Saw, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, Edward II, The Double Dealer (Drama-Logue Award, Best Director), Halsted Street: Chicago (GLAAD Nomination) and The Lisbon Traviata as well as the local premiers of his own works including Hopeful Romantic (Drama-Logue Award, Best Playwright, LA Weekly and Robby nominee), Recalled to Life and Tawdry Tales.
