The Access to Ustads Project presents an evening of classical sarode with master musician Alam Khan, son of Ali Akhbar Khan, accompanied by Ravi Albright on tabla drums. Sponsored by Seattle Tabla Institute & NEA Artworks.
Son of the legendary Sarode Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, Alam began his training into the Maihar Seni Gharana at the age of seven. Alam was blessed to learn and live in the traditional style of Guru and student. Ali Akbar Khan's careful crafting and guidance shows in each note as well as in Alam's imaginative way of expressing the ancient ragas passed down from the courts of Emperor Akbar by Mian Tansen in the 16th century.
He has toured worldwide and established himself as Ali Akbar Khan's true heir and the face of a new generation of Sarode players, attracting praise and attention from musical icons such as Sitar Legend Ravi Shankar, Carlos Santana, Slide Guitarist Derek Trucks, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, and many more of India's finest musicians.
Alam has also collaborated and performed with a wide array of artists from different genres such as the grammy winning Tedeschi Trucks Band, Karsh Kale, Beats Antique, Eligh, film composer and performer Michael Andrews, composer Christopher Hedge, Rabab virtuoso Homayoun Sakhi, The San Francisco and Fremont Symphonies, conductors Christian Reif and Michael Morgan, Oud musicians Yair Dalal and Rahim Alhaj, Bob Weir, Rob Wasserman, Amp Live and God's Robots.
Ravi Albright is a professional tabla player and the Executive Director of Seattle Tabla Institute and Adjunct Professor of Tabla at Lewis & Clark college in Portland, OR.
Born in Seattle, Ravi is one of only a few ganda-banda ( formally recognized ) disciples of Pt. Anindo Chatterjee of Kolkata, India. In 2006 he was initiated into the Farukhabad Gharana, one of India's traditional schools of tabla playing. Ravi has performed with India's most accomplished musicians such as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ut. Shahid Parvez Khan, Pt. Tejendra Majumdar, Pt. Nayan Ghosh and many others. RaviAlbright.com
