Tchaikovsky and His Contemporaries
Nikolai Kachanov, conductor Adrian Daurov, cello Mikhail Zeiger, piano; Guy Brewer, organ Hanna Golodinskii & Arina Ayzen, soprano Carla Lopez-Speziale, mezzo-soprano
As the preeminent Russian vocal ensemble in the US, the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York is one of the worlds greatest ambassadors of the Eastern European creative spirit. The chorus will perform fascinating lesser-known works of Russian composers.
Tchaikovskys genius gave powerful inspirations to his contemporaries. The program reveals his influence on the musical life of such legendary composers as Rachmaninoff, Taneyev and Arensky.
Among many gems on the program are little-known Tchaikovskys poetic cantata "Nature and Love for female trio and chorus -- one of his most moving and beautiful compositions. The female trio will also perform Tchaikovskys Let My Prayer Arise. a liturgical piece written for female trio and chorus. Other pieces include an arrangement of Rachmaninoffs haunting Vocalise, for cello and chorus, Taneyevs majestic three-part cantata John of Damascus -- which weaves a dense musical tapestry around an ancient Russian church chant, Give Rest, O Christ. Also on the program is Arenskys charming "Three Quartets" for chorus and cello.
