Horticulture Series
This 12-week course is designed to give an introduction to the principles and practices involved in the identification, selection, development, production, and care of horticultural crops (fruits, vegetables, turf, and landscape). These sessions provide ISA and/or WSDA Pesticide credits.
 
INTRODUCTION TO HORTICULTURE - classification, structure, growth and development, and environmental influences on horticulture plants.

NATURE AND PROPERTIES OF SOILS- An introduction to the chemical, physical, and biological properties of soil; the origin, classification, and distribution of soils.
a.Chemistry of Soil
b.Biology of Soil

VERTEBRATE PESTS- identification, life cycles, habits and habitats.  Introduction of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) introduces the cultural techniques required for suitable pest management with an emphasis on practical application and managerial techniques.

ENTOMOLOGY: INVERTEBRATE PESTS- insect biology and physiology.  Cultural techniques required for suitable pest management with an emphasis on host plant resistance, practical application and managerial techniques.
LANDSCAPE PLANT MATERIALS- Focus on identification, culture, characteristics, and use of plants. Emphasis is placed on nomenclature, identification, growth requirements, cultural requirements, soil preferences, and landscape applications.

CARE & MAINTENANCE OF LANDSCAPE PLANTS- introduces the cultural techniques required for proper landscape maintenance.

URBAN FORESTRY AND ARBORICULTURE  introduction to the art, science, and practice of selecting, identifying, establishing, and maintaining landscape trees. Participants will learn proper arboriculture practices including tree selection, installation, and care, and be able to demonstrate a professional approach to managing trees in an urban landscape.

TURF MANAGEMENT - A study of turfgrass maintenance practices and how their interrelationships can be utilized to develop management systems.  Introduction to entomology and management of insect pests; characterization of soil physical and chemical properties for the establishment and maintenance of turf; and turfgrass nutrition and growth

HANDS-ON SPRING PRUNING -The methods and practices of successful pruning.  Hands-on pruning and professional demonstration.
