Love Makes a Home: The Life of Rebecca Boone
Love Makes a Home at the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative at 2 pm Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018. The fiddling by Boone descendant Bruce Greene heals hearts as notes soar between narrative moments. This historical play, by local author Kiesa Kay, has received wide acclaim in performances at the Orchard at Altapass, the Folk Art Center, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, White Horse Black Mountain, and more. The play has been chosen for a convocation at Berea College.
In this play, Rebecca Boone, wife of explorer Daniel Boone, shares a woman's perspective on frontier life. She tells her most intimate secrets and gives an inside view of the hardships and happiness she found, as the first woman settler at the mouth of the Kentucky River and one of the first women settlers to walk through the Cumberland Gap.
Bruce Greene, nationally known fiddler and Boone family descendant, will play the tunes he chose for the play from his repertoire of thousands of tunes. He is the foremost collector of fiddle tunes from the area traversed by the Boones, and many of the tunes he found while befriending old time fiddlers are available in the Bruce Greene Collection at the Berea Sound Archives in Berea, Kentucky.
Terra Currie, who plays Rebecca Boone, started Theater on Cedar in North Georgia. She has acted with the Montford Park Players and at Asheville Community Theater. Terra lived for a few years at Turtle Island Preserve in Boone, NC, and she works for Mountain Gardens in Burnsville, NC. She and her husband, Paul Feather, have co-authored two books about social responsibility and living with connection to the land. They built a cabin together with their own hands on their farmland in north Georgia. Terra has one daughter, Zinnia.
