Bluegrass Legend Alice Gerrard - Special DC Album Release Show
Free Dirt Records, the Hamlin Street Diner, the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, and Bluegrass Country Radio present bluegrass legend Alice Gerrard live in concert (with special guests) in Washington, DC on September 22! Join us in Northwest, DC at Pierce Hall at All Souls Unitarian Church to celebrate the newly unearthed Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard recordings 'Sing Me Back Home: The DC Tapes, 1965-1969'. Sourced from Alice's private archive, the recordings invite us to witness the creative process of Hazel & Alice--just two voices and a handful of instruments working out arrangements at home. How better to celebrate the release of these never-before-heard tapes than to return to the very space where, in 1965, the duo recorded their debut album for Folkways, 'Who's That Knocking? And Other Bluegrass Music'. Alice Gerrard will be joined by the next generation of traditional musicians including Joseph Dejarnette, who co-produced the new album, as well as acclaimed old-time duo Jake Blount & Tatiana Hargreaves who will kick off the evening with an opening set.

Musical trailblazers Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard are revered today as pioneering women in bluegrass, two artists whose musical partnership directly inspired future innovators like Naomi Judd, Emmylou Harris, Tim O'Brien and Hot Rize, and even Bob Dylan. The pure joy that Hazel and Alice found playing together is perfectly captured on a set of newly unearthed recordings, 'Sing Me Back Home: The DC Tapes, 1965-1969', out September 21 on Free Dirt Records. All but one of the songs have never before been commercially released by the duo. Sourced from Alice's private archive and digitized with help from the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC Chapel Hill, the recordings invite us to witness the creative process of these towering figuresjust two voices and a handful of instruments working out arrangements at home. Across 19 tracks, the duo sings the classic country of The Carter Family, The Louvin Brothers, and Jimmie Rodgers; contemporary hits of the 1960s penned by Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard; and barn-burning traditional standards. Sing Me Back Home is a raw, unfiltered listen to Hazel & Alice at the height of their collaborative energy.
JAKE BLOUNT & TATIANA HARGREAVES
Jake Blount and Tatiana Hargreaves began their musical partnership with an exchange of rare field recordings in January 2017. Fueled by a joint ambition to shed light on the sounds Black and Native American people have contributed to Americas musical canon, the two began to collaborate with increasing frequency; first assisting each other on their respective theses in Ethnomusicology, then on Blount's debut release, Reparations. They've performed at numerous museums and universities, and opened several shows for GRAMMY-winner and MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Rhiannon Giddens. Blount and Hargreaves have become known for their technical skill, their deep understanding of history, and their respectful, yet innovative presentation of traditional music. Blount is a member of the award-winning old time stringband The Moose Whisperers. He became the first Black person to make the finals of the prestigious Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop, WV, and the first to win, when The Moose Whisperers took first place in the 2016 Traditional Band Contest. Hargreaves became the second woman to claim first prize in fiddle at the same competition in 2009. She has since toured with musicians such as Dave Rawlings, Gillian Welch, Laurie Lewis, Darol Anger, and Bruce Molsky, and played on Laurie Lewis GRAMMY-nominated album The Hazel And Alice Sessions.
