The Essence of Fado with Ramana Vieira
RAMANA VIEIRA Back for an encore performance: THE ESSENCE OF FADO at Casanovas in beautiful Maui, Hawaii
Journey to the world of Portuguese fado as interpreted by Ramana Vieira, a northern California native of Portuguese descent. Fado is the most widely recognized genre of Portuguese music, dating back to early 19th century, Lisbon. It is characterized by poetic lyrics related to darker elements of love, loss, and sadness. Fado contains Moorish musical roots, and must follow a specific musical structure. Its eruptive ballads evoke the emotion of saudadea yearning or longing for something lost. Fado was no doubt popularized by mournful widows having lost their loves to the sea. Ms. Vieiras work captures traditional fado and influences from the Portuguese diaspora in a musical tapestry that ranges from the whispering, haunting ballads of fado, to American classics and jazzy blues. She also is a prolific pianist and songwriter having penned and composed her own original fados, of which several have been nominated at the International Portuguese Music Awards.
She is joined by a masterful ensemble: Maui's own Andrea Wells and Danny M on bass.
Vieira, whose released album, Fado da Vida, has been described by Mundo Portuguese newspaper as the New Voice of Portuguese World Music. She has headlined the world's largest Portuguese festival, the New Bedford Portuguese Feast in Massachusetts, and performed at the 2010 Encontro Festival in Macau. One of her original songs, Unido Para Amar, was played during the 2006 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Ramana was chosen to donate a private concert as part of a silent auction benefit for the 50th Grammy MusicCares where Aretha Franklin was the honorary guest, and was invited by United States Congressman Jim Costa to perform for the president of the Azores, alongside the internationally acclaimed guitarrista and artist Chico Avila. The opening track of her new album, Cabo Verde, was nominated as Best World Music Song at the 2015 International Portuguese Music Awards and 2016 for Best Fado. Vieira was invited to the 2016 Jazz Camp in California where she was celebrated and taught Fado to student and fellow artist such as John Santos, Nickolas Beard and many other artist showcasing their experience and love of music for this acclaimed California music camp. Vieira long standing performance site, Fright and Salvage in Berkeley, CA along with SF Live Arts held at Cyprians Church in San Francisco and Fenix Supper Club in San Francisco, CA have grown a love for Fado that continues to delight audiences both old and new. Vieira Fado Fusion, in its eclectic character, has stimulated her audiences to reach inside and hear the many rhythmic tones that distinctly attach her harmonic Fusion to classic Fado. She skillfully combines her soulful riffs to reconnoiter musics many facets while she is blending and bending her Fado Fusion sound.

The most widely recognized music of Portugal, fado is a passionate, soul-stirring music with soaring vocals and dramatic tales of love, loss and redemption. Legendary fadista Amália Rodrigues popularized fado in the 20th century, and it is once again enjoying considerable popularity today, thanks to platinum-selling Portuguese singers such as Ana Moura and Mariza. The New York Times has recognized Vieira as an American artist at the forefront of the fado resurgence. Traditionally, fado was music for voice and the guitarra Portuguesa, a 12-string guitar derived from a type of African lute. But as Larry Rohter of The New York Times has noted, "Conservatory-trained singer Ramana Vieira adds a New Age sensibility and instrumentation to the music with cello and drums."
Vieira's personal relationship to fado music lies deep in her family history. Her grandfather was a well-known musician and composer from Madeira Island, Portugal. She was born in San Leandro, California, to Portuguese immigrant parents, and was exposed to the voices of Portugal's past at a young age. "During my childhood, I sang with my mother to Amália Rodgrigues and other fabulous fadistas that were part of her special record collection," she remembers.
