Kim Nalley: Jazz & Blues
With Larry Vuckovich, Barry Finnerty, Jeff Chambers, and Kent Bryson. Saturday October 20 3:00 pm doors open 2:00 pm.
Awarded Most Influential African American in the Bay Area in 2005 and Best Jazz Group 2013, vocalist Kim Nalley is already being called legendary and a San Francisco institution. With an international reputation as one of the worlds best jazz and blues vocalists, she has graced concert halls from Moscow to Lincoln Center. Vocally, she has pipes to burn packing a 3 1/2 octave range that can go from operatic to gritty blues on a dime, projection that can whisper a ballad yet is capable of filling a room with no microphone, and the ability to scat blistering solos without ever losing the crowd's interest or the intense swing. She has been compared to all the greats, but in the end, it's Kim Nalley and no one else.
Barry Finnerty: Born in San Francisco, jazz guitarist, keyboardist, singer, songwriter, and arranger, known for his work as a touring and session musician for Miles Davis, The Crusaders, the Brecker Brothers, Hubert Laws, and Ray Barretto. In 1974 he began playing with Chico Hamilton, Airto Moreira, and Flora Purim. In 1975 he became a member of the Joe Farrell Quartet, and later in the decade played with Tower of Power, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. Finnerty is featured on much of Davis's 1981 album The Man with the Horn and is mentioned in Davis's autobiography.
A talented and versatile bassist, Jeff Chambers is known for his impeccable timing, dynamic rhythms and improvisational dexterity. Chambers began his career in Milwaukee with the renowned pianist and vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery. In 1978, he left the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and entered the University of Buddy Montgomery, touring extensively with the master. Since then, Chambers has toured all over the United States, Canada, Central and South America, Europe, and Japan, performing with many of the world's most prominent jazz musicians. Known as one of the foremost bassists in the country, hes played with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Les McCann, Eddie Harris, Benny Carter, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Henderson, Dakota Staton, McCoy Tyner, & Joe Williams.
Drummer Kent Bryson is a Bay Area native. He has performed at numerous Jazz and Blues festivals throughout the US, Canada, Italy. Germany and Japan. A busy sideman, he works frequently with Jazz, Blues, R & B, and show artists. He appears regularly with vocalist Kim Nalley and other Bay Area favorites, as well as national artists such as Houston Person, David "Fathead" Newman, Ernestine Anderson, and Plas Johnson.
Pianist Larry Vuckovich has played and recorded with jazz greats Jon Hendricks, Mel Torme, Irene Kral, Joe Williams, and Bobby McFerrin among others. He has won acclaim from critics and jazz audiences for his deeply imaginative style and repertoire heard at prestigious North American and European jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals. He is as equally at home in world music/classically influenced modal jazz as he is in hard-swinging bebop, post-bop, contemporary jazz, and down-home blues. The New York Times notes that his unique outlook and collection of influences "set him apart from most pianists who are heard regularly in New York"."San Francisco pianist Larry Vuckovich has been an accompanist, bandleader and world-jazz pioneer over seven decades. Hisalbum Somethin' Special is exactly that. His playing sparkles with understated wit... He's telling a story... It's the work of a master." -Andrew Gilbert, columnist for San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe, Jazz Times, Down Beat.
