GIA Spotlight on Synthetic Diamonds
Help us welcome Dr. Ulrika F.S. DHaenens-Johansson GIA Senior Research Scientist and Kate Donovan, GIA Manager of Global Alumni Relations to Houston.
We will be serving light bites and wine from 6:00 to 7:00; giving everyone a chance to unwind and catch up after work.
Kate Donovan will gives us all a GIA Update at 7:00 and then hand over the podium to Dr. Ulrika F.S. DHaenens-Johansson, who will share the current status of synthetic gem diamonds in the jewelry marketplace and GIA's ability to conclusively identify synthetic vs. natural diamond.
Dr. DHaenens-Johansson will deliver an overview of the basic principles of diamond synthesis (HPHT and CVD growth methods), the typical production results from melee to larger size synthetic gem diamonds, and the existing technologies that effectively identify and separate natural from synthetic diamonds, including GIA's lab services and new separation device available to the trade.
After the lecture concludes, Dr. DHaenens-Johansson will demonstrate the recently released GIA iD100 testing device; an easy-to-operate, sophisticated desktop instrument to reliably identify mounted and loose natural colorless diamonds, separating them from all simulants and from diamonds that may be synthetic or treated.
This a great opportunity to get a grip on what synthetic diamonds mean to our industry and how we can identify them. All proceeds will go directly to the Houston Texas GIA Alumni Association's scholarship fund.
