Eight Songs for a Mad King in Columbus, OH
With generous support from the Johnstone Fund, Tenth Intervention performs Eight Songs for a Mad King in Columbus, Ohio.
The Mad King is paranoid and manic, confined to a playpen of chicken wire while he trains his court musicians (or are they birds from his menagerie?) Obsessed with the sounds in his head, the King can only express his profound levels of psychosis through the use of his voice. Paul Pinto has taken this role, originally created for baritone Roy Hart, and has become a wreckless and fragile Mad King, seething with anger, anguish, and mania.
Commanding a five-octave range with an entire repertoire of distorted vocalizations, Pinto leads us on a psychosomatic expedition of a delusional mind. Eight Songs for a Mad King expertly balances meticulously notated techniques and effects alongside passages of fanciful charm and romance. The instrumentalists skillfully riff alongside his shrieks and howls, exploring the poetry of a madman.
It all ends with the smashing of a violin.
15 Photos is a set of songs for soloist and drone instrument, written by Paul Pinto, inspired by a series of black and white portraits by Aleks Karjaka, as well as stories, poems and essays on aging. Each of these 15 songs focuses on one part of the body dramatically changed as the performer realizes hes not considered young anymore by most societal standards. Performed as a theatre for voice and movement, 15 Photos is commissioned in part by Roulettes Resonant Bodies Festival.
Funding for this performance in Columbus is made possible with the support of the Johnstone Find for New Music and by New Music USA.

Tenth Intervention is equal parts presenting organization, music series, and artist collective in New York City. As ambassadors of modern music (Interlochen Public Radio), we present a bold and progressive concert series that explores the intersection of performance, experiential art, and its potential to reflect social issues. Founded in 2012 by violinist Hajnal Pivnick and composer/pianist Dorian Wallace, the group formed with the purpose of creating new work in a highly collaborative environment. Together with composers, musicians, visual artists, choreographers, dancers, and community organizations, Tenth Intervention has produced programs that expand the reach of music to be pioneering, diverse, and community focused.
Our programming has been recognized with foundational support from the Lower Manhattan Community Council, the Earle Brown Music Foundation, and the Puffin Foundation. We have been presented as featured artists at National Sawdust, NPR's Science Friday, New Music Gathering, Interlochen Public Radio's In Studio A, Biome Arts/Swale, Bandits-Mages, Centre Pompidou, the Greene Space at WNYC & WQXR, Studio 360, Vox Hebraica and Videology for our Silent House live score to silent film residency.
