"At Night, We Go Inside to Sleep"
for change dance collective has been developing choreographic material for nearly two years in preparation for the October 2018 premiere of "At Night, We Go Inside to Sleep", an evening-length work inspired by stories of survival, resilience, and compassionate power found in a rural village in Nicaragua called Villa Catalina.
Explorations in this highly collaborative process seek to discover the ways in which our individual lives are differentiated by who we are in the daytime, and what we can become in our dreams. In a liminal space between fighting to survive and imagining a world of our own creation, how do we find compassion and repose? And how can we tap into the wisdom of our communities, ancestors, and folk traditions to find spiritual guidance?
The neighborhood of Villa Catalina was built from the ground up after Hurricane Mitch devastated a small agricultural community in 1998. Now twenty years later, the children of Villa Catalina are fighting to break out of cycles of poverty and dreaming of creating a new reality for themselves and their community. Osmar Narvaez, a performance artist with the organization Teatro Catalina, will collaborate with fcdc on the creation and performance of this dance theater work, and Nicaraguan composer Andres Martinez and American composer Nicolas Lell Benavides will collaborate with fcdc in the writing of new music in a combination of recorded and live music.
