Plumes / The Firnats
Our band began with the solo work of bass player, John, sourced from music he had been writing since age 17. In high school he was in a blues/funk rock band called Roslyn with drummer, Ben. The two, luckily, went to Boston University and continued playing together with the addition of John's freshman roommate and friend Tim. That's all of us.
The Negligent Biome - EP was our first release on April 20th, 2016. The four songs had been written in the previous fall after they were inspired by John's experience with a negligent biome. At Tim's suggestion, the four songs were released together. The band's name started as Uncle Jerry and the Meat Sweats, a name which produced huge polarization; those who were for it loved it, thinking it funny, memorable, and unique. Those disliked it thought it was pretty gross. It happened that Tim was one of those people and, wanting the band to like the name of the band, it was changed to a back-up idea we always had in our backpocket, Plumes.
Our sound spans across a few genres like rock, folk, blues, funk, and reggae. A lot of the earliest stuff has a lot of nylon strings and minimal percussion. Influences include Andrew Bird, Arctic Monkeys, The Vaccines, Dr. Dog, and Blake Mills, but, ultimately, the sound has been mostly defined by the way we know how to play.
The Firnats are a mom rock band based in Richmond and Reston Virginia. Formed in late 2015 by Sean Flanagan, The Firnats take inspiration from the doo wop pop groups of the 50's, and the alt rock bands of the 90's and 2000's to produce their own unique brand of rock music. Since being created, the band has played everywhere from small college basements in Richmond, Virginia and College Park, Maryland; to more established venues such as The Rock and Roll Hotel and Black Cat in D.C, as well as Strange Matter and Gallery Five in Richmond. The Firnats recorded their debut album, "Fear Not", completely DIY in producer Hapa Siuhengalu's basement in Reston Virginia. The album was released in August of 2017 and now has over 10,000 streams on Spotify. They are currently recording their second album that's set for release in winter of 2018. The current line up consists of Sean Flanagan on guitar and vocals, Griffin Low on bass, Kurtis Kunkel on drums, and Chris Castro on guitar.
