NJProghouse Presents: Orpheus Nine - The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra
Orpheus Nine
http://www.orpheusnine.com Orpheus Nine is delighted to return to NJProghouse, where a standing-room-only crowd celebrated the 2017 release of debut album Transcendental Circus. Founded by keyboardist and lead vocalist Jason Kresge, O9 features Matt Ullestad on guitar, Tony Renda on bass, and Mark DeGregory on drums.
While the centerpiece of Transcendental Circus is its six-part, nearly-22-minute title track, Orpheus Nine deftly balances virtuosity with emotion and melody in every one of the album's "beautifully crafted songs" (Prog). Listeners to this "very impressive debut" (Progression) have cited elements of ELP, King Crimson, Rush, Saga, Styx, Genesis, Frank Zappa, Gentle Giant, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Yes, Marillion, and Return to Forever yet any past influence quickly yields to the fresh sound of a band focused on future possibilities.
"One of the things that stands out about the band," wrote Lee Henderson of Art Rockin', "is the maturity of knowing when to razzle dazzle and when to keep it cool." In a recent interview with Music Web Express, Kresge supported this by asserting that "all the technical prowess in the world is meaningless without emotion and passion. Obviously the notes matter, but it's delivering those notes with passion that gives them purpose and makes them resonate with listeners."
Transcendental Circus has indeed resonated with fans and critics alike, garnering rave reviews and prompting Prog Magazine to declare that "Orpheus Nine are among the best bands ploughing this ageless furrow." In October, the New Jersey quartet will have the honor of performing at ProgStock Festival in Rahway.
"A melodic crazy quilt of twists and turns." - Progression "Insanely elaborate and yet aggressively melodic." - Prog "Very mature debut that succeeds on most every level." - DPRP "A hell of a fun listen that deserves your attention." - Laser's Edge "The music is diverse and sounds fresh and original." - progVisions "One of the most interesting new bands of recent times." - Empire "Genius. Madness. Beauty. Surprise. Schizophrenia. Perfection." - ProgArchives "Transcendental Circus has perfection written all over it." - Art Rockin'
http://www.galacticcowboyorchestra.com The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra has been freakin minds for 6 years! Since 2009, the band has stretched their own musical limits with album after album of intensely energetic ART-ROCK. Definition of ART-ROCK: A type of rock music, often with poetic lyrics, characterized by sophisticated harmonic, dynamic and technical complexity based on forms derived from classical (and jazz) music and requiring performers of considerable training and skill. It sounds so serious, but when you combine that type of music with four fun-loving musicians who dont take themselves too seriously and who have a love of so much music beyond art-rock (which is why the band covers songs from Otis Rushs All Your Love to Whipping Post to When the Levee Breaks to YYZ), you get a bit of magic in live music form. The band writes and performs music that excites them and has a blast doing it! The GCO appreciates and aspires to superior musicianship while combining their love of a good riff, hummable melody and groovy jam over a jazz/jazz-rock musical bedrock. It all culminates in an intensely energetic live performance because we freakin love what we do and love that the fans dig it too!! What other bands do we sound like? We have been compared to King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Dixie Dregs, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
