Chasing Ice Film Screening w/ Jeff Orlowski and Climate Change Forum
The Beacon Public Space Project and the Beacon Sloop Club are hosting a special second Saturday event for Earth Day on April 13th featuring a screening of the award winning film Chasing Ice with director Jeff Orlowski, followed by a panel discussion with renowned experts in the field of climate science. There will be an opening reception with an opportunity to meet the director and panelists. The film documents National Geographic photographer James Balog's Extreme Ice Survey, a multi-year project using innovative photographic techniques to document changes in the Earth's glaciers. Battling untested technology in subzero conditions, he comes face to face with his own mortality. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Following him from Iceland to Greenland, from the Alps to Alaska, and many other locations director Jeff Orlowski captures the drama of Balog's quest in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. As the story unfolds it makes a powerful case for climate change. It's hard to imagine anyone remaining a skeptic after seeing this film. Following the film there will be a forum and panel discussion on climate change with experts in the field including Andy Revkin author of the New York Times DotEarth blog, Dr. Radley Horton, Columbia University, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and Dr. Marco Tedesco, Director, Cryospheric Processes Laboratory, City College of New York. This event will be held on Saturday, April 13th, 1:00 pm at the Beacon Theatre, 445 Main St., Beacon, NY. Tickets are $20 in advance through brownpapertickets.com, and $30 at the door, seating is limited so advanced purchases are strongly encouraged.
