Concert #1 L'Harmonie des Saisons
Friday Sept 21, 2018, 7:30pm, Brunton Auditorium: L'Harmonie des Saisons, A Musical Soirée at the Home of Bach. The family home in Leipzig of Johann Sebastian Bach was a revolving door of illustrious and celebrated musicians, both from within the family and visitors from far and near. We can well imagine that, depending upon which celebrity was attending or which son was at home, Bach adapted his vast chamber music repertory to suit the occasion. It was typical for the Baroque composer to rework, transpose or assign different instruments depending on the personnel available. Certainly, singing was a beloved feature at such an occasion. We propose a representative program, featuring both works adapted by Bach for various instrumentations and our own adaptations of some of our favorite Bach chamber music. In addition, popular soprano arias from Bach's secular cantatas will enhance our presentation of A Musical Soirée at the Home of Bach. New Brunswick artist, Deanna Musgrave, will join the ensemble, showing two 48 x 48 acrylic works on stage during their performance.
Concert #2 The Rose Ensemble
Saturday Sept 22, 2018, 7:30pm, Brunton Auditorium: The Rose Ensemble, Land of Three Faiths: Voices of Ancient Mediterranean Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The result of years of intensive research and training, Land of Three Faiths is at once sacred, secular, folk, and classical, embarking on a fascinating exploration of language, spirituality, and cultural exchange. Featuring instruments and musical ideas that blur the lines between Arabic and European, this entertaining and enlightening program is steeped in the rich history of the Abrahamic faiths, achieving a perfect balance of edgy improvisation, exotic vocal styles, and ancient traditions. Highlighting the Hispano-Arabic Middle Ages as both an important and devastating chapter of Judaic, Christian, and Islamic history, laments of the Sephardic Jews mingle with Arab-Andalusian dances and Spanish court songs, while rhythmic cantigas, Hebrew cantillation, and Gregorian chant meet the mystical world of Sufi poetry. This program wasnt a performance. It was more like a resurrection. The Rose Ensemble breathes life into stark, ancient manuscripts . . . restores them as new creations. Ames Life & Times.
