Unforgettable: The Bold Flavors of Paula Wolfert's Renegade Life by: Emily Kaiser Thelin
If you were part of the cooking and food scene in the 70s and 80s you could not miss the emergence of Moroccan and Middle Eastern food on our tables. That movement in the US was led by Paula Wolfert who wrote, went on TV, visited towns like Chicago and cooked her foods, informing our restaurants and palates about a whole new way to eat.
By now, tagines and shashuka, sumac and various whole grains are commonplace. We may hardly remember how much of a stir they caused when we first were presented with them. And, more recently, and unfortunately, neither does Paula. She has been diagnosed with dementia and much of her memory of these foods and how to make them has disappeared.
But there are many ways in which her staff has worked together to help her remember the recipes and to reveal their origins for a special book called UNFORGETTABLE which charts Paulas amazing history in the kitchen as well as her journey through this new chapter of her life.
We will read the memoir-like text and then enjoy some of her recipes as we discuss the book and learn much more about dealing with someone with dementia and how to be an effective caregiver.
Meet in Dame Jennifer Andersons kitchen, where a plentiful tagine and couscous will be ready for our dinner. Please plan on bringing a supporting dish to share, details to follow after registration!
