Recital: Hugo Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch
Spend an evening in 1890's Vienna with Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch, a showcase of the unique intimacy inherent in the Lied genre. The music hearkens back to romantics Wagner, Schubert, and Schumann, and anticipates the expressionism of Schoenberg and Webern. These 46 songs, detailed and masterful settings of Paul Heyse's poetry, alternate between the ultra-romantic, the irreverent, and even, well, goofy.
The poetry is easily relatable, colloquial and often funny. The text is displayed using a projector, so that non German speakers have an accessible way to connect to the poetry. For newcomers, the concert will hopefully serve as a moving and entertaining introduction to the genre of Lieder.
Performers include: Nate Raskin, piano Drew Selcke, vocalist Elisa Sutherland, vocalist
