Kids Workshop: Hand Painted, Hand Stiched Audubon Birds
In this class, young artists will create a detailed muslin bird painting to hand stitch into a beautiful life size painted stuffed animal. Children will discover the ideas and artwork of James Audubon through story telling, guessing games and funny old myths about bird habits and migration. After getting excited about bird lore and admiring the detailed renderings of JJA, we ourselves will observe a real taxidermy yellow shafted flicker! We will notice it's shapes, patterns and colors, and learn to draw and paint the bird from life. The kids will work to thoughtfully create their own palette and experiment with mixing color. We will then use machine and hand stitching techniques to sew our work into a beautiful and functional stuffed bird sculpture to bring home!
This workshop taught by Kate Hargrave is structured for individual attention and instruction and is designed to develop observation skills, build knowledge of art history, gain confidence in using our tools and materials and most of all to foster a love for the wonderful process of making art.
