For almost 2,000 miles, one line defines a country and divides two worlds. The line has always been about people keeping people out, keeping people safe, making people believe they can save one way of life, or have a chance at a better one. And now, along this line, a newly elected president has proposed a wall. From the Gulf to the Pacific, The Wall explores the impact, reveals unknown issues and details the unintended consequences of President Trumps $20 billion promise to build a wall between the United States and Mexico. Journalists from the Arizona Republic and throughout the USA TODAY NETWORK spent months traveling the length of the U.S.-Mexico border by land and air, documenting the possible impact of a wall on security, life, commerce, smuggling and property rights. Part of a package that won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting, the judging committee lauded the project for "vivid and timely reporting that masterfully combined text, video, podcasts and virtual reality to examine, from multiple perspectives, the difficulties and unintended consequences of fulfilling President Trump's pledge to construct a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico."
