Design and Citizen Activism: An ARCADE Salon with Nick Licata and Karen Cheng
Want to make a difference in your community? Join Nick Licata (former Seattle City Councilmember, author, and activist) and Karen Cheng (University of Washington professor of visual communication design) for an ARCADE salon exploring how design can make citizen activism more effective. We will look at three major areas of activity: protesting, advocating, and volunteering. You dont need a big budget to make an impact (although that helps!). You need a creative and open mind to be an effective collaborator in supporting change both inside and outside "the system."

Nick Licata was a Seattle City Councilmember for 18 years. In 2012 the Nation named him as Progressive Municipal Official of the Year; the Seattle Weekly named him Best Local Politician twice. His book, Becoming a Citizen Activist, which received the Gold Medal for Social Activism by Independent Publisher, will be available for purchase and to be signed by Nick.

Karen Cheng is a Professor of Visual Communication Design at the University of Washington, where she teaches information design and data visualization, with an emphasis on communicating political and social issues. She has a Master of Design from the University of Cincinnati and is the author of Designing Type, published by Yale University Press. Karen is a regular contributor to ARCADEs Info Feed column.

After sales have ended, tickets will be available at the door.
