2018 Southern Foodways Symposium
21st Southern Foodways Symposium October 11-13, 2018 Oxford, Mississippi
Join us for the 21st Southern Foodways Symposium, staged October 11-13 in and around the town of Oxford, Mississippi, and focused on literature. Through lectures, meals, tastings, and experiences, SFA argues that food and literature are twinned expressions of people and place, cultural means to explore issues like racism and gender inequity that roil the South, and the pleasures of social engagement that reflect our best instincts. Our year of programming began in February in Birmingham, Alabama, when SFA staged a Winter Symposium on the power of transformative narratives. In June, we traveled to Lexington for our Summer Symposium, which explored the linkages between the land and literature. Our definition of literature is broad. It spans modern soap operas and menu narratives and narrative song cycles. Novels, nonfiction, and poetry, too. Appropriately, SFA has booked a diverse roster of speakers from many disciplines, including Monique Truong, Randall Kenan, Zandria Robinson, Naben Ruthnum, and others. More details are available at www.southernfoodways.org/events.
A full program schedule will be emailed to all attendees on Monday, October 1.
