Benanti Winemaker Dinner at Mourad Restaurant
The Benanti family has been tending to some of Sicily's oldest vines since Giuseppe Benanti began expanding the grape acreage of his father's farm in the late 1890s. Giuseppe Benanti (the 2nd) revived winemaking under the family name in the late 1980's and has since been joined by his two sons, Antonio and Salvino, in the operation. The family works together at multiple vineyard sites around Mt. Etna, coaxing tiny amounts of fruit from densely packed rows of old vines.
Despite the winery's limited production, Benanti is among the most well-known of Etna's producers, thanks to being one of the earliest pioneers in the region. The Grecale, a Mediterranean wind from the northeast, blows more or less continually, giving the wines a trademark saltiness and acidity which pairs perfectly with Mourad's cuisine.
