Today, visit The Morbid Anatomy in the circa 1870 Fort Hamilton Gatehouse of historic Green-Wood Cemetery.
Morbid Anatomy is a project that has been surveying the interstices of art and medicine, death and culture since 2007. Founded as a blog, over the years is grew to encompass an open to the public research library, a series of international events, films, and publications. It is best know for its last incarnation--a stand alone (and recently shuttered) museum in Brooklyn New York built with co-founder Tracy Hurley Martin. Today, Morbid Anatomy produces events, exhibitions and publications in tandem with a variety of partners around the world.
For this special open house, Morbid Anatomy's founder Joanna Ebenstein and head librarian Laetitia Barbie will give a special tour of the Morbid Anatomy Library--a research library and collection making available books, photographs, artworks, pieces of ephemera, and artifacts relating to art and death, anatomical art, collectors and collecting, cabinets of curiosity, the history of medicine and curiosity and curiosities broadly considered. The curators will also lead a tour of the Morbid Anatomy exhibition: Bridging Two Worlds: The Land of the Living and the Land of the Dead, which explores artifacts relating to the the belief in afterlives through material culture and artworks from around the world.
This event is part of Reimagine End of Life NYC. Reimagine End of Life is a community-wide exploration of death and celebration of life through creativity and conversation. Drawing on the arts, spirituality, healthcare, and design, the weeklong event sets out to spark dialogue, break down taboos, and bring diverse communities together around one universal topic. https://letsreimagine.org/
