NJW presents Javon Jackson in Concert
NJW is pleased to announced the appearance of renowned saxophonist Javon Jackson in the Jazz Cave for a concert Friday, April 5 at 8pm. Saxophonist Javon Jackson came to international prominence as a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. As a member of the Blakey band, Javon toured and made many recordings with the legendary drummer. In addition to Blakey, Jackson has toured and recorded with Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, Donald Byrd, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Richard Davis, Bobby Hutcherson, Curtis Fuller, Stanley Turrentine, and Jimmy Cobb. As a recording artist, Jackson has appeared on over 125 recordings. He has also developed a formidable career as a leader, recording 13 CDs of his own and touring throughout the world. Javon's current musical group, The Javon Jackson Band, incorporates many styles including jazz, funk, R&B and rock. Describing Jackson's 2008 recording, "Once Upon a Melody," Jazz Review noted "It's amazing how consistently good . . . Javon Jackson is. His ability, disc after disc, to deliver, at the highest artistic level, music that is not just technically proficient and full of the spirit of jazz's tradition, but also aesthetically pleasing and a whole lot of fun to listen to, is beyond compare . . . another incredible tome of the finest straight-ahead jazz available." Jackson maintains a busy touring and teaching schedule, with frequent appearances in New York clubs, such as The Iridium and Smoke, as well as Universities and festivals. His Nashville appearance is a stop between residencies at the University of Louisville and Ohio's Tri-C Jazz Festival. Accompanying Javon Jackson for the Friday concert will Bruce Dudley on piano, Roger Spencer on bass, and Josh Hunt on drums. It is sure to be an amazing performance. The concert is Friday, April 5 and will consist of 2 sets, beginning at 8pm. Doors open at 7:15. The Master Class in Improvisation, for all instruments, is Saturday, April 6 at 1pm. Tickets for the concert are $25 / $15 high school and college students with ID, and will go on sale Monday, March 25 at 10am, with all seats reserved.
