Death in Colonial New York, A Walking Tour with Allison C. Meyer
Date: Saturday, October 27 Time: 4-5:30pm Admission: $20 Location: Meeting in from of the Museum of The American Indian
Few traces of colonial New York remain among Manhattan's streets and skyscrapers. This walking tour will uncover the history of mortality in early New York, particularly related to how, and where, a person was interred. Life could be hard in the rowdy seaport, with yellow fever outbreaks and an active slave trade, and this exploration will also consider what is missing from the plaques, surviving cemeteries, and other public commemorations of our past.
Allison C. Meier is a Brooklyn-based writer on the arts, history, and nature. She moonlights as a cemetery tour guide.
This event is part of Reimagine End of Life NYC. Reimagine End of Life is a community-wide exploration of death and celebration of life through creativity and conversation. Drawing on the arts, spirituality, healthcare, and design, the weeklong event sets out to spark dialogue, break down taboos, and bring diverse communities together around one universal topic. https://letsreimagine.org/
