Alone Together
Oil Lamp Theater in Glenview ushers in spring with the hilarious Broadway comedy Alone Together by playwright and screenwriter Lawrence Roman.
George and Helene Butler (Andy Clifton and June Miller) have just shipped their youngest son off to college. The couple is now looking forward to the solitude and restful pleasures of being "alone together" after thirty years of faithful parenthood. But their dreams of carefree days and passion-filled nights are shattered when their eldest son Michael (Martin Hughes) sneaks back into their home and sets up housekeeping in his old room.
Things quickly go from bad to worse when brother Elliot (Chris Lysy) also returns home after being kicked out of his own home by his wife. Add to the mix a homeless coed, Janie (Megan Captaine), who shows up looking for temporary lodging with the family and things get much more complicated and frustrating. Helene and George soon have a real situation on their hands. And what of their youngest son, Keith (Ryan Dooley), who just left for college? Will he, the last to leave, now join this group of "boomerang kids" by becoming the last to return?
This witty and wise comedy considers some of the questions that every generation asks: What should parents do if their baby birds fly back into the nest? Can kids ever really imagine their parents without them as impulsive and romantic adventurers who long to once again to burn the candle of life at both ends? And can parents who hope they raised their children to be mature, well-adjusted adults ever get beyond seeing them as little kids who need bandages on their skinned knees and reassurance that there's nothing scary in the dark?
And when baby birds leave the nest, just how long should the mama and daddy bird wait before remodeling the extra rooms in the nest into a study and a den? These and many other questions are asked and answered in this is witty and touching comedy written by the author of Under the Yum-Yum Tree.
Keith Gerth, Executive and Artistic Director of Oil Lamp Theater, directs this production of Alone Together. Keith was also recently the director of Oil Lamp's successful Christmas show, It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. Jasmine Ryan is the stage manager for this production.
