Teahouse of the August Moon by John Patrick
Teahouse of the August Moon focuses on Captain Fisby, who is assigned the task of Americanizing the village of Tobiki in Okinawa following WWII. Fisby is sent by the U.S. Army in order to bring democracy to the residents and to build them a pentagon-shaped schoolhouse. The islanders would prefer a traditional teahouse, however; and when Fiscby starts to see the beauty of preserving their culture and way of life, he agrees to help them build it instead. Along the way, Fisby discovers the potent alcoholic beverage they brew is popular with the American GI's and a big money-maker, the Cooperative Brewing Company of Tobiki is churning out liquor by the gallon and selling it to neighboring military bases. Chaos arises when Colonel Purdy decides to visit Tobiki and Captain Fisby is in danger of being court-martialed, reprimanded for misusing government supplies, selling liquor, and not Americanizing the villagers fast enough. All in all, through Fisby, we learn that sometimes the better life is had by taking a "step backward in the right direction."
