Valley Classic Ensemble
A MUSEical Journey: Adventures in Composition.
Including the lush and romantic String Sextet "Souvenir de Florence" byTchiakovsky and a Zydeco inspired piece by Rimelis. With Colleen Jennings, violin; Jessica Meyer, violin; Scott Slapin, viola; Tanya Solomon, viola; Rebecca Hartka, cello; and Philip Helzer, cello.
Rebecca Hartka: Active as a soloist, chamber musician and educator, cellist Dr. Rebecca Hartka released her debut CD Folkfire in October 2010, receiving critical acclaim as well as NPR play including a feature on Paul Elisha's Performance Place . During her international debut tour of Southeast Asia, a performance in Vietnam was reviewed as "... no less than magical and eloquent." As comfortable in a symphony hall as a folk club, Hartka has appeared in venues such as the Rockwood Music Hall in New York and Club Passim in Cambridge. In the past few years Hartka appeared as a solo recitalist in the North Quabbin Center for the Arts Series, the Exploring the Arts series (Bozeman, MT), the 88 Keys series (NY), and the Jazz and More series (MT), among others. As a Deans Scholar, Hartka earned her Doctorate of Musical Arts and Masters in Music from Boston University College of Fine Arts and her Bachelor of Arts in Music from Oberlin College and Conservatory studying with Andor Toth, Rhonda Rider and Leslie Parnas among others.
Colleen Jennings: Based in Amherst, Massachusetts, Colleen has been performing and teaching around the globe for many years. As a member of the Kammerorchester Basel in Switzerland and a resident there for 4 years, she toured extensively throughout Western Europe. Also while in Switzerland, she co-founded the chamber ensemble Ex Luce with soprano, Ana Arnaz. The ensemble seeks to bridge early, contemporary and traditional music in its varied programs some of which include works written for the ensemble. Other performing highlights include a European tour with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra led by world renowned violinist, Joshua Bell, performing Vivaldi's 4 Seasons and Schubert's Death and the Maiden. Colleen plays stateside with the New England Piano Quintet, Arcadia Players, the Springfield Symphony, and as principal second violin with the Opera North orchestra. She teaches at Smith College and Westfield State University and is on the summer faculty at Greenwood and Apple Hill Music Camps. She received a Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory and Masters of Music degree from Rice University. In addition she received an Artist's Diploma from the Schweizerischer Musikpädagogischer Verband in Basel, Switzerland.
