SongBird North - Where Writers Sing and Tell (Formerly "Bluebird North")
Variety is par for the course with Vancouvers longest-running songwriters showcase, where listeners can expect to discover talented artists who are new to them, and hear familiar voices in a different way. Its a unique live music experience: a warm, unplugged vibe, great stories, and of course, superlative song-writing. On September 18, SongBird North launches its 23rd season in Vancouver at The Roundhouse. The all-Canadian line-up includes host/producer Shari Ulrich, Torontos Shawna Caspi, Montreals Matt Stern, and Nashville veteran Bruce Miller.

SongBird North: Where Writers Sing and Tell is produced by Shari Ulrich for the Songwriters Association of Canada. The SAC gratefully acknowledges the support of the SOCAN Foundation. For more information on the SACs mandate, activities and membership programs, please visit www.songwriters.ca.

BACKGROUND: Since 1995, SongBird North (formerly Bluebird North) has been a mainstay in Vancouver for songwriters from across the continent, as a bi-monthly showcase that features four talented singer/songwriters of widely varying styles, on stage together, taking turns playing their own original songs and sharing stories with one another and the audience about their work. The series has toured nationally, and has established itself in several other Canadian cities. Vancouver remains its longest-standing host city. www.songwriters.ca

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

SHAWNA CASPI
Toronto-based singer-songwriter Shawna Caspi performs solo, but theres a whole band under her fingertips. She believes in poetry and the power of one person and one instrument, accompanying herself with a remarkable lyrical fingerpicking guitar style. Her performances capture audiences with grace and intimacy whether the setting is a living room, a festival stage, or the bar car of a passenger train. Shawna loves the landscapes of her travels and while weaving them into her songs, she has also been portraying them on canvases, painting one-of-a-kind works of art inspired by the rich scenery she sees on tour. Shawnas fourth album "Forest Fire" is a collection of songs about burning things down and building them up again. When the words get heavy, they are held up to the light of love and gratitude. With these songs, Shawna strives to be unafraid, to embolden quieted voices, to tell the truth above all else. http://www.shawnacaspi.com/

BRUCE MILLER
As an artist on A&M Records Canada during the 1970s, Bruce D Miller released an LP with hit singles Anna Marie, Rude Awakening and Summer of Our Love, produced by David Foster and Gaye DeLorme. During this time he also penned hits for Pure Prairie League, Prism, Valdy and Susan Jacks. Since the early 1980s, Bruce has been a recording artist on Capitol Records Canada, had songs used in film and TV, and was a staff writer in Los Angeles for Homewood Music, Rick Halls Fame Music in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and at Sony/Tree in Nashville. Bruce and Muscle Shoals co-writer Walt Aldridge penned a #1 hit in the U.S. for Reba McEntire, The Fear of Being Alone. Bruces songs have been released by Rascal Flatts, the Dixie Chicks and many others, totalling more than 20 million sales worldwide. Today, Bruce divides his time between Oregon, Nashville and Vancouver, and most recently has written with and had releases by Poco (Hard Country), Shari Ulrich (You Will Always Be My Friend), Me and Mae (My Heart Goes On Without You), Carvin Walls (Lacey), and the Nashville Pieholes (One Womans Trash is Another Womans Treasure). http://www.brucemiller.ca
