Some would say Lew Card is not just a songwriter, he is a song.
The Merriment of Lew Card's music persists after you've realized it may not be as merry as you think.
He comes from Austin, Texas, yet his soul and wit are all Tennessee. He takes you on rides that wind through some dark, weird places. In the end, the deep joy of his music leaves you in a bright place with a quirky smile that's about as true as Lew's.
A bit of a traveling songbird, he wades in and out of intricate finger pickings carrying a uniquely, somber voice that reverberates alongside delicate acoustics focusing on tempo and mood without sacrificing intricacy. His lyrics are poetry.
Growing up, there was always a healthy dose of Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett in the Card household. Skipping forward to college and really finding himself musically, Card started to get really into bluegrass and old time music. Furry Lewis, Gus Cannon, and Memphis Jug Band have been a constant in his music for the last 20 years. You can find the simplicity in lyrics and melody with most everything he writes these days.
"I guess in short, it seems like my musical journey always comes back to Memphis one way or another."
Card takes the stage early this Friday, starting at 8 p.m.
