Suminigashi: Japanese Paper Marbling with Ink with Artist Sheryl Oppenheim
Saturday, July 28 | 12-5 PM | $50 ($40 for Friends of SAC)
Space is extremely limited. Advance registration required.
Suminagashi marbling is the oldest known form of marbling, originating in Japan in the 10th-12th centuries. This process, in which ink is floated onto the surface of water and then transferred to paper, yields beautiful and surprising patterns, ranging from simple to complex. This class will provide an introduction to the art of suminagashi. After learning the basic techniques, students will have ample time to create a number of their own suminagashi decorated papers. All materials will be provided.
Sheryl Oppenheim was raised in Orlando, Florida and currently lives and works in New York City. She is a painter who began to learn the craft of marbling after encountering marbled papers at her first job in New York, at a bookbinding supply house. Her books of marbled paper are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Watson Library, the New York Public Library, the Walker Art Center, the Kohler Art Library and the Brooklyn Museum. Her work has recently been exhibited at the Cranbrook Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Small Editions, as well as galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Oakland and Paris. She received a BA from Brandeis University and an MFA from Temple University's Tyler School of Art.
