Mila Turajli Serbia, France & Qatar 2017 1h 42m About Acclaimed filmmaker Mila Turajlis (Cinema Komunisto) newest documentary is a portrait of her family, her history, and her home country of Serbia, told through the engaging and probing conversations around the re-opening of their family apartment.
In 1945, Turajlis family apartment was divided and redistributed by the state government. Turajlis mothers political activism meant that they were spied on from the very rooms they used to own. Now her fascinating mother, Srbijanka, can talk about that other side as they have been given permission to open it, years later. A staunch public advocate and voice of resistance against Slobodan Miloevi for years, Srbijanka discusses with her daughter their complicated personal and political histories, while reflecting on the divided past they share. Winner of Best Documentary Feature at IDFA.
The apartments history gives Srbijankas daughter Mila Turajli a frame on which to hang her story of Yugoslavia and Serbia over the last century, yet her tireless mother is the films real, thought-provoking star as she casually details her part in the eventual overthrow of the monstrous Slobodan Miloevi and her thoughts in the wake of his departure.
