This savage, biting commentary on bourgeois capitalism and modern morality in Victorian London follows Macheath, a prominent figure in the city's criminal underbelly. When Macheath becomes engaged to a Miss Polly Peachum whose father tightly controls all of city's beggars, Macheath and Peachum engage in a struggle for power over London's lowest classes.
