ASCE Seattle Section Ports and Harbors Committee Monthly Dinner
Mike Mueller, owner of eTrac Engineering, will be presenting examples of integrated LiDAR topographic scanning and multibeam hydrographic sonar mapping. These two technologies have existed for several years, although they are seldom employed together. Recent advancements have been made which allow these devices to be used together on various vehicles, including vessels and remotely-controlled craft. The ability to create dense, accurate and photorealistic geospatial datasets above and below the waterline is improving existing surveying methodologies and creating new applications for mapping the coastal environments including port and marine facilities. Collecting several million, highly accurate points in a project area from a moving vessel has the potential of increasing the survey data available to engineers by an order of magnitude while also offering a reduction in the time and cost of data acquisition over traditional surveying methods. The presentation will provide a summary of the technology, potential applications, sample projects conducted by eTrac as well as some of the pitfalls and challenges of these new data collection approaches
