A member of Ireland's foremost family of song, The Black Family, come hear guitarist Shay Black and pianist Eamonn Flynn sing old Dublin street songs, music hall songs, Irish traditional ballads, songs from the Scottish and English traditions, rollicking reels & joyful jigs, along with songs by contemporary writers. Part of a duo with his brother Michael (both from the renowned Black Family Singers), Shay has a special fondness for songs that include their audience in chorus, and many of the songs are narratives with stories. With each show interspersed with stories, jokes and humorous childhood anecdotes, they invariably have audiences smiling broadly & joining in on the choruses.
This performance is part of the Second Sundays Concert Series at the Swedenborgian Church, a national historic landmark built in 1895, and an Arts&Crafts architectural treasure that feels more like a meeting hall than a church. The hand-wrought beamed ceiling is supported by raw madrone timbers with the bark still attached. The hand-crafted chairs are original, made without nails, screws, or glue. California landscapes by the artist William Keith and two stained-glass windows by Bruce Porter are the only pictorial elements in this wood-paneled sanctuary, a favorite setting for romantic, intimate weddings.
