Aromatic Water Distillation Workshop - Learn the Ancient Art
This is a practical workshop on producing your own vibrant and vital hydrosols, otherwise known as aromatic waters. An aromatic water is water enriched with both the essential oil and the water-soluble volatile components of a plant. The essential oil is finely dispersed through the water in a low concentration, giving each aromatic water its individual smell. These water-soluble volatile constituents provide the aromatic water with a more wholesome action, which is more like that of the whole plant when compared to the action of the pure oil. More people are using hydrosols as medicine - they are brilliant for aromatic plants, contain no alcohol so good for children as well as those who don't want to consume it and the medicine making is a beautiful art to learn.
The workshop aims to familiarize the participants with the tools and techniques required for manufacturing hydrosols for home use or for stocking your own herbal dispensary. We will look at some important herbs that you can make hydrosols from and why you would use them.
While being a practical workshop, other topics that will be discussed are the science behind the process, sourcing the equipment, packaging, storage and preservation, practical applications. For the workshop we will be using a beautiful copper Alquitar still from Portugal.
Chris Gambatese is a great friend of ours based in Cork City. He is a community herbalist, passionate about making all his own medicines from seed to bottle and incorporates some innovative processes using some principles of Alchemy. In the past few years, he has also become certified as a brewer and distiller and regularly teaches classes in both fields. There is no-one better to learn this ancient method from.
His latest project is organising guided tours specialising in the native plants and fungi (especially medicinal), archaeological and sacred sites, and places of cultural significance in Ireland, lead by local herbalists and naturalists. The first 2 tours are in conjunction with Rosemary Gladstars Plant Lovers Journeys.
Cost: £50 You will go home with a 100 ml sample of the aromatic water. The remainder of the distillate will be donated to HWB. If you have volunteered for Herbalists without Borders in the project or the garden there is a £10 off.
