YATC Presents: What Every Girl Should Know
The Young Americans' Theatre Company is proud to present the last production of their July 2018 summer season; "What Every Girl Should Know" by Monica Byrne, directed by Eliza Jacobson and assistant directed by Louise Heller.

"In a Catholic reformatory in 1914, three teenage girls (Anne, Theresa, and Lucy) pass the time with masturbation rituals, though theyre innocent of the sinful nature of their act. Then a belligerent new girl, Joan, shows up, bearing illegal contraband: birth control materials distributed by the womens-rights activist Margaret Sanger. The girls start reading the material and jokingly pretend to venerate Sanger as a saint, but then undergo a profound conversion experience. They begin to follow Sangers life in the newspaper, pretending that theyre traveling on their own, assassinating enemies and taking lovers at will. Through their letters to each other, they reveal their pasts, marked by abuse. The girls slide deeper and deeper into their fantasy world, to the extent that objects from their fantasy world start appearing in the real oneincluding a baby."

NOTE: This show contains strong themes of sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, pedophilia and incest, as well as strong language and mentions of miscarriages and violence. While these themes heavily influence the plot of the show, they will not be physically represented onstage. Additionally, this modern show intentionally includes some antiquated language. While we do not condone the use of these termsin 1914 or nowwe felt that their inclusion in the script was a purposeful illustration of a problematic piece of our history. This show also contains harsh lighting/strobes. This show is not intended for children.
