Profs & Pints Workshop: Alternative Academic Careers
Profs and Pints Workshops presents: "Alternative Academic Careers: Use that PhD to Succeed Outside Academe," with Emily Dufton, Montgomery College lecturer, historian, and freelance writer and editor.
With the tenure-track job market constantly shrinking, current and recent doctoral students need to prepare themselves to work outside the academic realm. Rather than suffering through underpaid work as part time adjunct instructors, many PhD holders are seeking alternative academic, or "alt-ac," jobs and thriving in them.
This workshop will help students prepare for alt-ac careers by describing the fields available to doctorate holders, helping students turn their CVs into resumes, discussing alt-ac fellowships, and helping students reimagine themselves as writers, consultants, government employees, and more.
Emphasizing the applicability of the skills fostered in doctoral programs, this workshop will help students embrace alt-ac careers and see exciting new possibilities for future success. (Tickets $30 in advance. People more than 10 miles outside of Washington DC can attend via Skype by emailing Emily Dufton at emily.dufton@gmail.com )
