FAUSTival
The story of Dr. Johann Faustus was told by Anonymous in 1587. Seventeen years later, Marlowe made Dr. Faustus the hero of his famous tragedy. In 1772, Goethe began his nearly sixty-year relationship with his own version. In the 1930's, Gertrude Stein turned the myth into a libretto for a non-existent musical score. From playwrights to painters, artists have been persistently compelled to retell this story about the dangerously infinite ambition within us.
Faust, in all its permutations, shows us a person trying exceed what they need and what they deserve. Prometheus stole fire from the gods. Dedalus built his son Icarus wings to fly too high. Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the forbidden tree. Faust sells his soul to the devil for knowledge and power, and, like his ambitious predecessors, pays dearly for this choice.
The FAUSTival is an artistic collaboration among five theatre companies: Equally Represented Arts, Midnight Company, Theatre Nuevo, Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble, and the Post-Romantics. From August through December 2018, each company presents an adaptation of the Faust myth in St. Louis, MO.
The FAUSTival pass gets you in to see all five plays for one bargain price. Please visit participating companies' respective websites for more details about the individual productions.
