Sonia Flew, produced by Virago Theatre Company at The Phoenix Theatre, San Francisco
Virago Theatre Company proudly presents "Sonia Flew" by Melinda Lopez. Performances at The Phoenix Theatre, 414 Mason St, 6th floor, San Francisco. May 11-June 1, 2013

REVIEWS ARE FANTASTIC! READ BELOW EXCERPT FROM BROADWAY WORLD:

"Virago Theatre Company steps boldly and passionately into heart-wrenching territory with its production of Sonia Flew, the dramatic story of a Cuban born woman who is forced to deal with her revolution ravaged childhood when she learns that her 18-year-old American son has enlisted and is headed off to war, post 9/11. Up until this point, Sonia has lived quite successfully without revealing, even to her beloved husband Daniel, that she was one of thousands of Cuban children who came to the US as an unaccompanied minor in a mass exodus dubbed Operation Pedro Pan. Playwright Melinda Lopez deftly fuses fiction with history to bring us a tale of heartache, betrayal and even possibly redemption. Playing now through June 1 at The Phoenix Theatre in San Francisco, Sonia Flew is one of the most finely crafted dramatic productions of recent note here in the bay area." 5/22/13 Broadway World.com

THE STORY: When Sonia learns of her son's decision to leave college, enlist in the military and fight against terror in Afghanistan in the weeks following 9/11, memories of her own childhood overwhelm her. She struggles to reconcile being forced as a young girl to leave Cuba at the dawn of Fidel Castro's rule with her own responsibilities as a mother facing uncertainty. Sonia must find a way to come to terms with her past, her lost parents, her own children and her adopted countryor risk losing everything that she loves. Set between post-revolutionary Cuba and post-9/11 America, SONIA FLEW telescopes the large cultural and political forces of a historic moment to examine their impact on the intimate lives of ordinary men and women. What do we owe our parents? Can we forgive the past? This poetic and urgent play bridges time and culture in a drama about the cost of forgiveness.

"An emotional powerhouse" The Stark Insider.
"Soars with grace and power" Jenn McKee, Entertainment Journalist
"Deeply compelling" Mercury News
"Tension and urgency underscore the play." Daily Herald
