Marcus Shelby Quartet featuring Tiffany Austin
Marcus Anthony Shelby is a bandleader, composer, arranger, bassist, educator, and activist who currently lives in San Francisco, California. Over the past 25 years he has built a diverse biography as a composer. His work and music has focused on sharing the history, present, and future of African American lives, on social movements in the United States of America, and on early childhood music education.
Shelby holds teaching positions at the Berkeley Young Musician Program, San Francisco State University, and the Stanford Jazz Workshop. He was the 2006 Fellow in the Resident Dialogues Program of the Committee for Black Performing Arts at Stanford University. As the 1991 winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship, Shelby's studies include work under the tutelage of composer James Newton and legendary bassist Charlie Haden. He is considered one of the Top Ten Most Influential African-Americans in the Bay Area.
Teaming up with Marcus and his band is Tiffany Austin! Widely hailed as one of the best jazz debut albums of 2015, Tiffany Austin's self-released Nothing But Soul made quite a splash, including sterling reviews in Downbeat and on NPRs Fresh Air. Her eagerly awaited follow-up, Unbroken, confirms the Bay Area vocalists status as one of jazz's elite singers and a formidable songwriter as well.
