Burnt Coast Night! with MNGWA Malagrupa and Robin Layne Band
A friday night trifecta of live Latin, African and Balkan music - with puppetry, dance, and the mysterious Slavic celebration of Kupala weaving light through the darkness.
Malagrupa: A small Trubaci-style band that plays classic folk music of the Balkans, with a nod to post-modern pop and ska. Formed at the end of 2016, the band features some of the top Balkan Brass players in Canada. https://malagrupa.bandcamp.com/releases
MNGWA: Rooted in the Afro-Latin soul of cumbia music, MNGWA (pronounced Ming-wah) blends elements of psych rock, salsa, reggae, and hip hop into the polyrhythmic pot. With 8 members from across North America and Europe, the Vancouver ensemble draws inspiration from many worlds. All are invited to join the sonic frenzy! https://soundcloud.com/mngwaband
Robin Layne Band: Award-winning percussionist and composer Robin Layne has put together a project that showcases the marimba and his energetic and virtuosic style on the instrument. Known for his collaborations with a wide spectrum of folk and world artists across Canada, Robins passion for rhythm has led him around the world. He has toured in China, Europe, Mexico, the US and Canada and pursued his studies in LA, Cuba, Mexico and West Africa. http://www.robinlayne.ca/
