San Antonio Mastersingers
For the Chapel of the Incarnate Word Concert Series, the San Antonio Mastersingers present Johannes Brahmss Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem).  The work premiered in Leipzig in 1869.  Brahms purposefully chose biblical verses set in German instead of the traditional Latin text. He wrote that he might have titled the work ein menschliches Requiem (a human Requiem), since he wanted the text to reach listeners in their own language.  Thus, when the work was heard in a private residence in London in 1871, Brahms meant it to be sung in English.  That performance also employed his own piano four-hand arrangement that was not merely a reduction of the orchestral material.  Through research into those original materials, the Mastersingers recreate the intent of Brahms in presenting his human Requiem as it was heard at the home of Sir William and Lady Thompson, Wimpole St., London, 1871.
