HFS Songwriters Night 2018
Join host and songwriter Jan Bramlett and this year's featured songwriters Kray Van Kirk, Mihael Kavanaugh, Ari Guillette, and Marcia Mendels for an intimate evening of music in Dell'Arte's Carlo Theater. Box office opens at 6:30pm and doors open at 7pm with the show starting at 7:30pm. $10 general admission, $8 for Humboldt Folklife Members, and children 12 and under are $5.
Kray Van Kirk If you ask someone about Kray Van Kirk's music, comparisons to John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Richard Thompson, or Douglie MacLean will come up. If you ask Van Kirk himself to describe what he does, he is likely to jump on top of a table in a crowded coffee shop and shout 'The wind is changing! Look sharp! Get out the map - it's time to go! We ride across a thousand pages and sail beyond the sunset, to seek, to find, to strive, and not to yield!' Some won't understand it, and that's perfectly fine. But those who do will wipe the tears from their eyes, smile knowingly, and drain their cups, toasting their own wild lands and wilder passions.
Mihael Kavanaugh Mihael Kavanaugh is a singer songwriter, who blends vocals with finger picking guitar, also using various tunings. The lyrics mirror nature, environmental, spiritual and good old love. He also utilizes solo flute to say that which words can't. He has been performing forty years in Humboldt, while mostly living in the Mattole valley.
Ari Guillette Local talents Arianna and Ruby Guillette perform original music that showcases natural acoustic instrumentation and soothing harmonies. Recently Ruby completed a National tour with That Captain and Arianna released her first CD of original music. The two plan for more shows locally throughout the summer, and hope to write more music for new CD releases! Do not miss out on this sister duo!
Marcia Mendels with Chris Manspeaker Chris Manspeaker plays guitar, and Marica Mendels plays keys and sing. While they have each written songs on their own, they've found that it expands their musical styles to write together. Chris hears music through his guitar rhythms and melody lines, which range all the way from funk to jazz to African, while Marcia's roots are folk, R&B and country. Because of their mix of styles, they have written a little bit of everything, which makes it hard to classify, but fun to listen to! They have performed together since 2006, and are finishing their 4th CD of original songs.
Don't miss this great night of music!
