Live at Studio5: A TRIBUTE TO BRENO SAUER
Neusa Sauer Quintet Neusa Sauer, vocal Luciano Antonio, guitar/vocal Steve Million, piano Geoffrey Lowe, bass Luiz Ewerling, drums
For the past year I've been wanting to offer a tribute to a dear friend of ours, Breno Sauer. Please allow me to share a brief personal story to give some context. Any of our friends old enough to remember Béa's and my wedding might recall several notable things. First, it was on a Monday, so that our actor and musician friends would be able to attend on what is often a "dark" night in those professions. Also, after we had carried on much too late (our reception was in a residential neighborhood), the police actually stopped by to shut us down, which caused my brother to comment, "Steve, this is a PERFECT night." Well, a major contributor to the perfection of the event was the glorious music. In the year prior to our wedding I had been working in the recording studio with a phenomenal band called Made In Brasil. Béa and I were crazy about this festive, soulful, exciting, joyous group, and felt they spoke directly to the manner in which we wanted to launch our marriage. We were beyond thrilled that they were willing to provide the music at our reception. That era marked the beginning of what would be a decades-long friendship between us and the husband & wife leaders of Made In Brasil (later, Som Brasil), Breno & Neusa Sauer. Breno was an extraordinarily talented composer/arranger/keyboardist, and Neusa possesses a voice like an angel that sensually weaves in and out of the band's rhythms with a beautifully liquid sense of time. It would be difficult to find two sweeter people than Breno and Neusa. They had their own love story, of course -- they had worked together at a television station in Brazil. Breno swooped up Neusa and they moved to Chicago where they not only continued to make beautiful music, they encouraged many other Brazilian musicians to follow them to our city to develop a thriving Brazilian music scene, which continues to this day. Sadly, we lost dear Breno last year and I've been wanting to hold some sort of event in his honor. On June 29th we will be offering a tribute to his life and music with a concert featuring Neusa's quintet and other guest musicians who knew and loved Breno.
Come on by to hear some soulful Brazilian music, share a few stories, and raise a glass to the memory of a great man.
We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience! See you there! -SR
