HARVEY REID
Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music educator Harvey Reid has honed his craft since the late 1970's in countless clubs, festivals, street corners, cafes, schools and concert halls across the nation. He has been called a "giant of the steel strings" and "one of the true treasures of American acoustic music," and is considered to be one of the modern masters and innovators of the acoustic guitar, autoharp, and 6-string banjo. He has absorbed a vast repertoire of American contemporary and roots music and woven it into his own colorful, personal and distinctive style. His 32 recordings on Woodpecker Records showcase his mastery of many instruments and styles of acoustic music, from hip folk to slashing slide guitar blues to bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, ragtime, and even classical.
Reid's skills and versatility on the guitar alone mark him as an important voice and one of the deepest artists in acoustic music. He won the 1981 National Fingerpicking Guitar Competition and the 1982 International Autoharp competition. Yet he's also a veteran musician with a long list of studio and band credits, a strong flatpicker who has won Bill Monroe's Beanblossom bluegrass guitar contest, a versatile and engaging singer, a powerful lyricist, prolific composer, arranger and songwriter, a solid mandolin, mandocello and bouzouki player, and a seasoned performer and captivating entertainer.
Reid started playing guitar in his early teens in Maryland and fell in with the now-legendary DC-area bluegrass scene. After street-fiddling and playing old-time and bluegrass music for close to 9 years, he moved into his van in the late 1970's and began pursuing solo acoustic songs & instrumental music, primarily fingerstyle acoustic guitar and autoharp. After stints in a bluegrass band in Colorado, playing Telecaster in a country band in Virginia, and a winter in Nashville, Reid migrated to Northern New England, playing 5 nights a week on the "blue-collar" folk circuit in Maine and New Hampshire, while developing his own personal blend of American acoustic music.
Although Reid has been somewhat reclusive, his reputation as a musician's musician has spread far and wide. Even though he is not associated with any record labels or hype machinery, his music is having an impact--he was included on the Rhino Records Acoustic Music of the 90's CD, and his Steel Drivin' Man CD was voted by Acoustic Guitar Magazine as one of the Top 10 Folk CD's of All Time, in company with Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez, and other hallowed names. His music appeared on the blockbuster BBC television series Billy Connolly's World Tour of Scotland. He has been a featured act at many of America's premier concert clubs and festivals, including Merlefest, the Newport Folk Festival, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the Walnut Valley Festival. Radio DJ's and critics nationwide have discovered his remarkable recordings.
Reid has also made his mark on the acoustic music world in other ways. He is responsible for most of what is known about the partial capo, developed all of the popular partial-capo configurations in use today, (including the Esus) was the first to record and publish music for the partial capo. In 1980 he co-founded the Third Hand Capo Co. Also in 1980 he wrote the first college textbook for folk guitar, titled Modern Folk Guitar, published by Random House. Reid probably published the first desktop-published book (in 1980) and may have even been the first acoustic independent musician to make a CD. He was certainly was among the first to make all-digital recordings and helped usher in the new era of "indie" recording with a series of articles he wrote for acoustic music magazines. He was also the first artist to endorse Taylor Guitars and began doing promotion for them in 1983. Reid's success "under the radar" has become a role model for a large number of young, independent musicians who want to pursue their careers outside the music industry.
JOYCE ANDERSEN
Joyce Andersen is a veteran musician who has enjoyed a varied 20-year career as side-gal, session player, singer-songwriter, and bandleader. Her live shows and recordings showcase her versatility as a vocalist and violinist who thrives on writing and interpreting songs across many genres from old-time, rock & Americana, to folk, pop, & swing. She started getting critical acclaim and radio play in the folk world with her first full-length CD "The Girl I Left Behind" (2000) for its songwriting, breadth of styles and her unique ability to harmonize her vocals with her violin. Her latest CD "SWERVE!" (Oct. 2011), marks the invention of her innovative new "violin troubadour" sound which reflects her strengths as an improviser, and her newfound interest in using technology (loops, effects etc.) to harness new sonic landscapes and launch into extended psychedelic jams. Andersen has made 9 CDs: 5 solo and 4 with husband and folk virtuoso, Harvey Reid. She lived and toured out of Boston, Nashville, and NYC before returning to her native New England in 2000 where she lives with her husband and their two boys, in York, ME. Andersen's music has brought her from the coffeehouses and taverns of her native New England, national & international touring as a solo artist and with husband, Harvey Reid, Childsplay, and a host of other artists in her side-gal days. She even made it to Carnegie Hall and the Conan O'Brien show.
Reid & Andersen's 4 CD, 80 page hardback book "Song Train" was featured in "Acoustic Guitar Magazine" for it's innovative and down-home approach to helping beginning & intermediate guitar players make more music. Andersen's songs "Strange Elation" (from CD "Right Where I Should Be") and "Filled with Love" (from CD "Love & Thirst") were featured songs on "Sing Out" Magazine's CD compilations. She is currently trying to get better at the juggling act of motherhood and touring violin troubadourhood.
Sing Out! magazine says her CDs "...places her right up there with any of the songwriters out there performing their songs today."
DAVE MATTACKS
Dave Mattacks {DM} professional career started in the UK with big bands before joining the influential folk-rock group Fairport Convention, freelancing extensively throughout his tenure with the band. In 2000, Dave left the UK & moved to Boston, MA where he continues to enjoy a full career in Music spanning live & studio work, both as a Musician & Producer.
DMs discography includes 5 CDs with Paul McCartney & various CDs / tours with among many others Elton John, George Harrison, Jimmy Page, Everything But The Girl, Sandy Denny, Chris Rea, XTC, Jethro Tull, Joan Armatrading, Brian Eno, Nick Drake, [Procul Harums] Gary Brooker, Peter Green, John Gorka, John Martyn, The Proclaimers, Cat Stevens & Loudon Wainwright.
DM successfully combined Fairports schedule with his freelance commitment for 13 years; however he finally left the band in March of 98 & moved to New England in the US two years later. A few of his credits since then include recording &/or concert dates with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Richard Thompson, Juliana Hatfield, John Jennings, Teddy Thompson, Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez, Steeleye Span, Susan Tedeschi, Martin Sexton, Dennis Brennan & Rosanne Cash.
As well as his performance, recording & studio-production schedule over the last few years, Dave has given several Master-Classes @ Londons Royal Academy of Music, taught @ The Berklee College of Musics Percussion Week [which twice included delivering an afternoon Clinic / Master-Class with an evening Band performance @ Bostons Berklee Performance Centre], taught @ Berklees 5-week Summer Program [five years running] & has been the house drummer @ Marblehead Arts Festival for the last ten years.
