CHERISH THE LADIES (REPLACEMENT FOR YOUNG IRELANDERS)
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will be presenting CHERISH THE LADIES in place of The Young Irelanders, who will not arrive in the USA until March. We are thrilled to welcome back CHERISH THE LADIES, who performed for us in 2006.
The all female group, CHERISH THE LADIES, is led by Joannie Madden who was born in the Bronx to Irish parents and is an All-Ireland Champion on the flute and tin whistle. The group took its name from an Irish jig, "Cherish the Ladies." Since 1985, Madden has been the central force behind Cherish the Ladies, driving them to international acclaim. The group has played the finest concert halls and have performed in North and South America, the K, Europe, New Zealand and Australia. They have recorded many albums, but their album THE GIRLS WON'T LEAVE THE BOYS ALONE, consists mostly of songs and includes guest appearances by Arlo Guthrie, Tom Chapin, Pete Seeger and the Clancy Brothers among others. The original group was formed from Irish American female musicians; the current lineup with Madden consists of founding member Mary Coogan from New York; All-Ireland Champion Mirella Murray from Connemara, County Galway on accordian; pianist Kathleen Boyle from Glasgow, Scotland; Fiddler Nollaig Casey from Bandon, County Cork and Kate Purcell from County Clare on vocals.
Cherish the Ladies has an album made with the Boston Pops that was nominated for an Emmy.
