Incontro Barocco
Vertical Player Repertory welcomes back Opera Feroce and Friends in full baroque regalia for INCONTRO BAROCCO, a sumptuously costumed evening of baroque music.
Incontro Barocco (Baroque Encounter) is inspired by the model of the baroque salon where overdressed people gathered to eat, drink and listen to overdressed performers.
Come in your finest duds! Baroque attire or fancy dress encouraged. Bring an appetite for fine music and exotic delicacies.
The program features vocal and instrumental music of Claudio Monteverdi, Nicolo Fontei, Luigi Rossi, Henry Purcell, Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Frideric Handel and Nicola Porpora, including Monteverdi's gorgeous duet "Zeffiro torna," Purcell's "Sound the trumpet" and "The soft complaining flute" and Vivaldi's "Vedro con mio diletto."
Beth Anne Hatton and Judith Barnes, sopranos Hayden DeWitt, mezzo soprano Alan Dornak, countertenor Kelly Savage, harpsichord Motomi Igarashi, viola da gamba Joseph Trent, traverso Costumes by Deborah Houston
About Opera Feroce
Opera Feroce ("opera that bites") is an ensemble of three singers and three instrumentalists who have enjoyed a close collaboration with VPR. Opera Feroce's hit pasticcio opera Amor & Psyche and the faux-opera-seria Arminio in Arminia were both developed and premiered with VPR's In The Works Series. Opera Feroce recently premiered Incontro Barocco in a plainclothes, foodless version at Columbia University as part of the Early Music at Columbia series.
Their work has received memorable reviews including but not limited to: "wonderfully small" and "magically twisted" (The Traveling Schubert Society), "Opera Feroce's witty staging mixed pathos and bathos" (The New York Times), "their voices blend with the ease and depth of an artisanal latte" (WQXR Operavore), "It is funny, it is touching, and it is thoroughly entertaining" (Woman Around Town), "...I realized I was too busy laughing to look at the program...opera had finally come alive."
