The Oakland Mills Music & Arts Committee presents: The 2008 "Jazz in the Mills" Music Series
The Oakland Mills "Jazz in the Mills" Music Series brings you months of glorious jazz in the newly renovated unique loft of a barn. Enjoy a nightclub setting with beer, wine, and snacks for sale, in the middle of Columbia!
As a part of OMCA's on-going effort to revitalize one of Columbia's oldest villages, what better way is there than to pay homage to jazz; America's true art form.
Our line up for this year and coming years will WOW you with the melodious sounds and inexhaustible talent of our performers.
Our very own local gem Lavenia Nesmith is the Jazz Series Coordinator, and our first performer in the series!

Lavenia Nesmith is a native Washingtonian and has resided in Columbia for more than 30 years. She has performed in the Washington metropolitan area for more than 25 years. She has performed in such venues as Blues Alley, The Henley Park Hotel, LaPorta's, Bohemian Caverns, Twins Jazz.
Lavenia currently performs at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel in SW, Washington, DC.
In August 2003, Lavenia was guest soloist at The Kennedy Center's "40th Anniversary of the March on Washington".

Lavenia has appeared in a dramatic presentation of slave narratives titled "NEVER TURN BACK" at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage under the direction of Curtis King, Executive Director, Black Arts and Letters Academy, Dallas, Texas.
At the invitation of the White House, Lavenia along with members of the Metropolitan Baptist Church Music Ministry, performed in the "Day of Prayer" Service for the Katrina victims, at The Washington National Cathedral.
Lavenia is Creator, Executive Producer and performing in scheduled presentations of two original productions:
"A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson" - a one woman show, telling her story in dialogue and song; "SISTA'S CAN SA-ANG" - A Tribute to females legends in Jazz.
She is joined by an extremely talented group of musicians - Chris Grasso jazz pianist, Lenny Robinson jazz drummer, Paul Carr saxophonist, and James King on bass.

Originally from Washington, D.C., Felicia Carter has earned accolades from audiences, musicians, and critics for her immaculate pipes and dramatic song delivery. Carters double-disc recording of original music and jazz standards Feather/Step Lightly, was recently hailed by The Run-Off Groove as an Americana masterpiece-in-the-waiting...one of the best albums of the first decade of the 21st century. In collaboration with bassist/composer Amy Shook, Carter wrote and performed music for Next Stop Silver Spring, a PBS documentary on the B&O Railroad which premiered March 2008 on WETA (DC). In 2007, Carter was invited to perform in Chile for the Jazz y Vino Festival with the Tony Martucci Quartet, and was a featured performer on saxophonist Russell Kirks recording, "Black and White".

Known for his hard-charging and soulful post-bop style saxophonist Paul Carr upholds the important tradition of the Texas tenor. Growing up, he studied and played with local heroes including saxophonist Don Wilkerson, the fabled educator Conrad Johnson, and the legendary Arnett Cobb. He studied two years on a full scholarship to Texas Southern University and completed his degree in music performance Howard University in Washington, DC.
Since then, Carr has been based in the DC area performing on the local scene at venues including Blues Alley, Twins Jazz, Takoma Station, and the now-defunct (but once vibrant) One Step Down. Carr has been a repeat performer at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Smithsonian Jazz Cafe, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art's jazz series.
Carr's 1993 recorded debut as a leader, a "PC10" was received with critical praise from the Washington Post, Houston Post, and USA Today, as well as magazines including including DownBeat, Cadence, and JazzTimes. Since "PC10," Carr has recorded on over 25 other recordings as a sideman.
Carr's strong commitment to jazz is most evident in his role as an educator. After over twenty years of teaching privately, Carr launched the Jazz Academy of Music, Inc., a 501 C-3 non-profit corporation dedicated to "advancing and preserving jazz through jazz education" via year-round workshops and a summer camp where Carr and a staff of local musicians teach high school students the principles of improvisation, small group, and big band playing. His students have been selected for local, state, and national jazz groups including the Maryland All-State Jazz Ensemble, the IAJE Clifford Brown Fellows, and Grammy National High School Honors Jazz Ensemble. Three of Carr's students have been accepted to the prestigious Julliard jazz program in that program's short history and several others have been admitted to The New England Conservatory, the Eastman School of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and the New School.
After a 13 year hiatus from recording as a leader, Carr has returned to the studio, composing and leading his own group. The result of these efforts have resulted in his latest self-released CD, "Just Noodlin'" featuring players including world-renowned trumpeter Terrell Stafford, and former Donald Harrison sideman - pianist Andrew Adair.
Carr has performed numerous times at the White House, for Presidents Clinton, and Bush as well as the late King Hussein of Jordan. He has toured South America, Central America, Europe, and the Middle East. In addition, as a performer Carr has shared the stage with artists such as flutist Kent Jordan, saxophonists Branford Marsalis, Kirk Whalum, and Steve Wilson, and trumpeters Terrell Stafford, and Wynton Marsalis.
Paul Carr's recently released CD "Musically Yours" goes to # 9 at Jazz Week (On chart for 8 weeks and counting.)

Columbia resident Delores King Williams is a native of Baltimore, Maryland where she began her musical studies at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She continued studying music and theatre and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.
Ms. Williams is equally at home in theatrical productions as well as concert settings and has performed in musicals, plays, cabarets, commercials, concerts, and video productions. Performance highlights include: international appearances at the North Sea, Montreux, and Vienne Jazz Festivals, a tour of India, performances at the White House and Carnegie Hall, off-Broadway runs with The Capitol Steps, an Australian tour of Porgy and Bess with the Washington National Opera, and Carmen Jones at the Kennedy Center with the Washington National Opera.
Delores has had the privilege of working with inspiring talents such as: Vanessa Williams, Betty Carter, The Smithsonian Masterworks Orchestra directed by David Baker, Keter Betts, Rich Matteson, Jay McSchann, Gene DiNovi, Jimmy Heath, and Quincy Jones.
Delores is a winner of a Downbeat magazine award, a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition, a winner of the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, an Audie award winner for audio book narration in Blood: Stories of Life and Death in the Civil War, and a former soloist for the United States Army Band. In addition to performing, Delores also immensely enjoys her work as a clinician and vocal coach.
Currently, Delores is a performer with The Capitol Stepsmusical political satire group and the recurring character of Dr. Mildred Wyeth in the Deathlands audio book series. She can also be heard singing the music of Hoagy Carmichael on Heart and Soul-her latest recording with the buselli/wallarab Jazz Orchestra.
